About the work

The Teatro La Fenice (“The Phoenix”) is a famous opera house built in Venice during the 18th century. Its current name reflects how it was able to rise from the ashes like a phoenix on three seperate occasions throughout its long history as one of the most renowned landmarks of Italian theatre: the first fire came in 1774 after the city's leading house was destroyed, the second one in 1836 and the third one was evidently the result of arson in 1996. Since its restauration it has been praised by music critics for its excellent acoustics but slightly maligned by some for being too “kitsch”. It features extensively in Donna Leon’s “Death At La Fenice” where a famous orchestra conductor succombs to cyanide poisoning.
